We for You | Daily Reflection | *by Maryam* ❤️

Salam Alaikum dear Sisters, I hope you are all doing well today InshAllah . 🌸

We often hear the phrase: “Have no expectations, and you won’t be disappointed.”
It sounds wise and simple. But for the human brain and the human heart, it is not that simple.

From a psychological perspective, our brains are designed to predict. The mind is constantly creating future scenarios: how someone will respond, what the outcome will be, how things might unfold. Without expectations, we could not plan, grow, love, or move forward.
Expectation is not weakness -it is part of how Allah SWT created our cognitive system.

Biologically, when we begin to hope for something, the brain releases dopamine -the motivation chemical. Interestingly, dopamine rises before the result happens. It rises in anticipation. When the hoped-for outcome does not occur, dopamine drops and that drop is what we experience as disappointment.
So when people say, “Don’t have expectations,” what they often mean is: don’t emotionally invest all your inner security into one single outcome. Don’t treat a possibility as a guarantee.

*But here is the danger*⚠️: if we interpret this as “want nothing” or “care about nothing,” we begin suppressing our motivational system. Fewer expectations may mean fewer disappointments but they can also mean less vitality, less striving, less hope.

*A healthier psychological position is flexibility.*❣️
Not: “It must happen this way.”
But: “This is one possible outcome among many.”

When the mind holds multiple possibilities, the emotional fall is softer if one path closes. The heart remains steady.

Islam does not teach us to have no expectations. It teaches us to place our ultimate expectation in Allah SWT alone.

Allah SWT says in the Qur’an:

“Perhaps you dislike a thing and it is good for you…” (2:216)

This is cognitive flexibility at a spiritual level.
We make plans. We hope. We strive. But we say InshaAllah. Not as a habit of speech but as a psychological anchor. It reminds us that outcomes belong to Allah SWT , not to our predictions.
The Prophet pbuh taught us to tie our camel and trust in Allah SWT . Effort and reliance go together. Expectation and surrender go together.

Tawakkul (trust in Allah) does not mean emotional numbness. It means:
• I will hope.
• I will strive.
• I will make du’a.
• But my inner peace will not collapse if the outcome differs.
Because my certainty is not in the scenario, it is in Allah’s wisdom.

Dear sisters, the goal is not to live without expectations. The goal is:
• To have hopes without attachment to one rigid outcome.
• To desire without desperation.
• To plan without losing peace.
• To expect from Allah SWT,not from people.

Let your heart hope, but mind stay flexible. And let your soul remain anchored in trust.

And disappointment is not bad at all, it’s not a sign you expected too much. It’s a sign you are human. Just most important not to stuck but move forward.
And Allah SWT, in His mercy, reshapes our paths in ways our limited predictions cannot see.

With ❤️,
Maryam
