We for You | Daily Reflection | *by Maryam* ❤️
Assalamu Alaikum, dear Sisters 🌸I hope you are all doing well.
Recently, I started reading Al-ʿUbudiyyah: Being a True Slave of Allah by Ibn Taymiyyah- the book in the picture above. To be honest, I’m finding it quite a heavy read. But at the same time, it has made me stop and reflect on a few things, and I wanted to share one of those reflections with you today. 🌿
ʿUbūdiyyah (العبودية) is about our servitude to Allah, what it really means to live as a servant of Allah.
Of course, we know what worship is. We pray, fast, make dua, read Quran and try to follow what Allah SWT has asked of us. But while reading, I found myself thinking about something beyond simply what I do:
Who am I becoming through my worship? And what does being a servant of Allah actually look like in my everyday life?
Allah says:
“I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.”
(Qur’an 51:56)
And this is where it became very practical for me. (By the way, I also found it really interesting that Allah mentions both jinn and humans here, two different creations, yet both created with the purpose of worshipping Him).
How do I speak when I’m upset? How do I behave when I don’t get what I want? How do I treat someone when there is nothing for me to gain? How do I use my money, my time and the things Allah has given me?
And maybe even more importantly, who am I when nobody is watching?
It also made me think about how we respond when our plans don’t work out, when something is taken away from us, when we have to wait, or when what we want and what Allah has written for us seem to be two different things.
Maybe this is where ʿubūdiyyah becomes more than something we understand, it becomes something we live.
Being a servant of Allah SWT slowly touches the way we see ourselves, the choices we make, our relationships, and even the way we go through our struggles.
And I think this is something we are all learning, in different ways, throughout our lives. 🌱
❤️ A little question for us to reflect on today:
Where in your everyday life do you find it most difficult to put what pleases Allah before what you personally want?
