REAL SITUATION.
5 years old child was screaming in the car because he was not allowed to stay at the birthday party. Mother was explaining calmly and logically WHY they needed to leave but child threw a sandwich box at his mother. The mother became more irritated, but remained calm and drew the car home.
What should have been done differently?
Empathise, to see a child who is struggling. Verbalise to the child how he still wanted to stay, how fun it was. Logical explanations ONLY after empathy and if necessary - stop the car and drive when everyone is more calm.
How do you manage to empathise in such situations ? When do you choose logical explanations? Is it difficult to stop/slow down, to be in present with the child's feelings?
